A tentative blueprint for a reset of USA-Africa relations
Having discussed in Part 1 of my essay why the USA and Africa matter to each other, and why a reset of their relations is needed, in part 2 I explore tentative shifts in US attitudes and policies to adjust to a new Africa yearning for sovereignty and dignity, but also to face increasing competition from China and Russia. Concrete join initiatives that can strengthen USA-Africa relations are also presented.
Inclined to exporting its values and lifestyle, categorizing Africa, and looking for rapid solutions to Africa’s challenges, the USA needs to resist impulses and shortcuts to build a mutually beneficial partnership with Africa, while considering the continent’s cultural particularities and needs.
