No topic divides historians, art experts, and nationalists as much as the restitution of art to countries of origin. Amongst these, are African nations, whose abundant treasures are today exhibited all over the world and many of which were stolen or taken unethically.

Whilst the restitution of colonial-era objects from western museums has been a hot topic since the 1960’s, it is only in recent years that it has gained traction, following economist Felwine Sarr’s and French historian Bénédicte Savoy’s report, which highlights the true extent of Africa’s missing artefacts.

The matter of restitution though goes beyond historical and cultural explanations. It must consider the real value and intention behind art and the present state of African nations, many of whom still lack the facilities and expertise to preserve, research and display items adequately.
