Why America matters to Africa

The scarcity of direct flights between the USA and African capitals is symbolic of an unspoken, yet complex, relationship between the two continents.

Frequently overshadowed by Europe’s dominance, the USA’s influence and interest in Africa is often perceived to be very limited. Yet, today more than ever it is evident that USA-African relations carry significance far beyond the two partners.

In front of changing internal dynamics in Africa, a shifting global geopolitical landscape and a new competition for the continent’s riches, it is particularly interesting to explore what the desirable changes in USA-Africa relations would look like from an African perspective. This is the subject at the heart of my article, which will be published in three parts.

In part one, I examine why the USA and Africa matter to each other and the reasons for which a reset of their relations is needed, in the context of both historical and recent events.
